Pottsville's nearly
"rags-to-riches" basketball squad come close to tying for first place in the East Penn League. Coach Deitch worked
hard with his squad, and they showed great improvement as the season progressed.
Pottsville High's cagers showed their potential strength by first downing the
strong Saint Clair team and then the fighting Gilberton squad. This was followed by two losses to two good teams, Tamaqua
and Lebanon. After defeating the Alumni and losing to Lancaster, Pottsville was victorious in its first league struggle, the
Easton game. We then dropped eight games in a row -- to Williamsport at home, Hazleton, Allentown, Tamaqua, Bethlehem, Reading,
Williamsport away, and Allentown Catholic. Once more we entered the win column by defeating Shamokin, Saint Clair, on its
own floor, proved too much for the Crimson Tide. One of our outstanding games was our 41 to 24 victory over Hazleton. We then
alternated victories by again defeating Easton, losing to Allentown, winning from Lebanon, and losing our final game to Bethlehem.
The seniors members of our varsity team were: Dick Hasler, Donald Bretz, Harold
Hasenauer, and Jack Flanigan. Other members were: Walter Reed, Bob Fey, Bob Unger, Mike Mahall, and Leonard Joyce.
