   "Skying To New Heights"

Champions indeed are the Pottsville Crimson Tide Basketball Team and coaching staff. The Tide once again captured the Schuylkill League Championship by defeating the Tamaqua Blue Raiders in a bloody brawl on the floor boards of North Schuylkill.

"The loss to Hazleton early in the season had some effect on the team, but they were able to shake it off and turn that loss into experience", stated Coach Jim Steidle. On to the Stabler Arena went the Tide dynasty to turn away yet another spoiler team, Allentown Central Catholic. For the grand finale at Stabler, the Pottsville team took on the hard-nosed roster of Northern Lehigh. In the process the Tide clinched the District XI Championship title which had escaped the Tide team for 42 years.

The Tide ruled over the Schuylkill League with an unblemished record and good steady, powerful floor play. The team rolled up a 26 games winning streak before being stopped abruptly by the York Catholic Irishman. Continuous support was another element which enabled the players to reach victory. " A real spirit lifter was the way the fans, student body and the public of Pottsville supported the team throughout the regular season as well as the play-offs," exclaimed Junior Omar Payne.

Season highs were achieved by high score percentage leader Chris Nabholz, with a 63 percent scoring average. Nabholz was also high rebounder with 119, and 461 points scored on the season. The assist leader with 211 and 96 steals, Tony Bacon definitely did the job at point guard. Mike Sukeena and Mick Kondrack were also high contenders in these catagories. Last, but not least, Mr. Defense- Omar Payne with 55 block shots, and Nabholz with 35, lived up to their title "Twin Towers".

The hard practices and repetition of drills is what gave us a foundation to work off of and build from", explained Mike Sukeena. Through dedication, desire, and teamwork, these ball-handlers reached their plateau- District XI Champions!
