In Coach Jim Steidle's secord year at the reigns, the varsity basketball team capped a 16-12 season with a league playoff spot, but they lost to Saint Clair in the first round. The team had a rocky start with losses to Reading, Lebanon, and Nativity. They then put their act in high gear and defeated two tough Schuylkill League foes, Saint Clair and Mahanoy Area. Coach Steidle thought that the Mahanoy Area game was the Tide's best because " The team followed the game plan and played well throughout." The hoopsters then won seven straight league games in December and January before clinching a league playoff spot with victories over Mount Carmel, Minersville, North Schuylkill, and Blue Mountain.

   Senior Joe Eckley led the team in scoring with a 17.4 points per game average. Joe's long range shooting and base line drives produced trouble for the opposition all year long. When the Tide's opponents concentrated on stopping Eckley, junior Tim Murphy picked up the scoring slack. Tim, with his patented jump shot, finished the year with 374 points for a 13.4 average. Two players who played the unsung hero position were Tom Flynn and Dan Phillips. Tom who averaged 7.1 points per game was the man who had to grab the offensive and defensive rebounds. In addition he had to keep the opponent's leading rebounder off the boards. Dan Phillips, a senior, had a 8.9 scoring average and was a key success of the team as he was the ball-handler and defensive specialist.

   A strong point of the team was its bench, Mike Everly and Mike Ferugio came in at the guard position while Tom Stearns, Dan Griesbaum, Jack Connors, and Mick Rosenberger rotated in at the big man's position. The Tide had depth, but Coach Steidle felt that at times this hurt them because consistency was lost with all the different combinations that were used.
