Boys basketball faced a setback when the extended football season forced the team to practice several weeks without key players. Nevertheless, once the season was in full swing, the boys began to work together, achieving their first victory over Nativity during the inner-city rival game known as the Battle of the Hills.

  Pottsville and Nativity started this rivial in 2001. The boys basketball team faced intense competition and a packed schedule, making up many games that were missed due to the extended football season in December. The varsity boys basketball team win 68-45 in a Schuylkill League game against Jim Thorpe Olympians handing them their first team loss of the season. Key victories over Pine Grove, North Schuylkill and Mount Carmel led the group closer and closer to district play.

   After losing to Blue Mountain 59-33 December 23, the Tide faced the Eagles a month later and showed them how sweet revenge was by slipping past them 47-41
