With the end of the
season approaching quickly, the boy's varsity basketball team laced up their Nikes, put on their jerseys and took the court.
In order to sharpen their skills, the team required to practice Monday thur Saturdays for countless hours. The boys lifted
weights after school and performed numerous drills and exercises.
"We basically worked on conditioning and fundamentals at practices. When the season got going, we practiced plays that
would work on our teams weaknesses," junior Bruce McMurtie said. With the beginning of the season resulting in disappointment
from continuous losses, senior captains of the varsity squad, Timothy McFarland, Dave Wilson, Dennis Maskerines and Brad Woznisky,
demonstrated leadership and ingenuity by making an effort to bring the team together.
"Our captains showed their leadership on and off the court by controlling the team and
leading by example." junior Daniel Quirk said. Though the capatins put tremendous effort into making the team unified,
the coaches, proved to be the real leaders with their five game winning streak.
After defeating Mahanoy Area in the league game, the boys made it to the Schuylkill League Championship where they captured
a victory over Pine Grove. "We were ahead by three at halftime and in the Third quarter we took a 22-2 lead. Then
Wartella, Quirk and Wilson hit a total of four three pointers which finished the game," Coach Tim Coyle said.
The season came to an end after a loss to the Parkland Trojans at the District
11 AAAA quarterfinals held at Blue Mountain.
