Although High
School had expected to have an exceptionally good team, the expectations of the most hopeful were certainly surpassed. Gibson,
Ryon, Wilson, and Faust, all old players, were back. The first three having been the main support of the two previous teams.
The fifth player was Bergstein, of the Junior Class, who turned out to be one of the best of guards. This quintet practiced
very hard until their team work was as nearly perfect as could be expected. While the way some of them found the basket so
astonished their opponents that they stood and marveled.
When they had reached this stage they went forth to conquer, and lo! When they returned they held undisputed the championship
of Central Pennsylvania. The first game was played with the Reading High school at Pottsville, High school outplayed Reading
boys at every point, and led from the very start. The score standing at the end of the second half 33 to 15 in favor of Pottsville
High School.
The second game was Pottsville High School
verus Phoenixville High School. This game was played at Phoenixville and was very close from the very beginning, the score
being tied at the end of the second half. This being the case, the two captains decided to play five minutes longer, during
which time each side scored a point, which left the score standing 16 to 16.
High School then played the Lebanon Boys on their floor and were defeated by a score of 35 to 23. In the first half our boys
had everything their own way, but were completely swamped in the second half.
The fourth game was played at Pottsville against the Pottstown Y.M.C.A. boys. This was one of the hardest fought games of
the season as there was very little difference between the two teams, the score being tied until the last few minutes when
High School caged a goal, which made our score 17 to Pottstown's 15.
The fifth game was played with Reading High School defeating them on their own floor. This was also won by only two points.
The score at the end of the first half being Reading 8, Pottsville High School 10. In the second half neither team was able
to score.
The sixth game was played with Lebanon at
Pottsville, with Pottsville High School winning without any trouble, for the Lebanon Boys did not appear able to find the
ball, and were outclassed at every point. The score was Pottsville 31 and Lebanon 9.
The seventh game was played at Pottstown against the Pottstown Y.M.C.A. boys. At this place
our boys did not get a fair representation, and consequently were not able to play their usual game. The score stood 35 to
11, in favor of Pottstown.
The last game Pottsville
High School played was against Phoenixville High School. Within five minutes of the beginning of the game, the superiority
of the High School boys was so plainly shown that there was no doubt as to the result of the game. The score was Pottsville
27 and Phoenixville 14.
The game ended the season,
which was one of the most, if not the most, successful basketball seasons Pottsville High School ever had in every way but
a financial one. Let us hope that the future teams will be successful in this way, also in every way.
